The Role of Luck in Football
Football is subject to high variance. A team might dominate a match, create five excellent chances, hit the post twice, and lose 1-0 to a deflected long-range strike. The scoreline alone tells a misleading story about team strength.
Predictive Power of Chance Quality
Over a 38-game season, luck tends to balance out. Teams that consistently create better chances than their opponents usually climb the table, even through a poor run of results.
Regression to the Mean
When a striker scores far above their expected goals, say 10 goals from chances worth 4.5 xG, they are "running hot", and their conversion rate usually falls back toward average.
How UTABIRI Uses This
Our model estimates each side's expected goals for the match from opponent-adjusted attack and defence ratings, with recent games weighted more heavily. It does not currently use shot-level xG data, so a team on a lucky or unlucky run can still be over- or under-rated. Our published confidence levels reflect that limit.
